Today marks my 10th anniversary at Automattic. 🎉
When I had the Slack-based (and text-based*, very important) interview with Matt, I still had no idea whether I’d land a job. Everyone I spoke to said it was nearly unheard of that somebody wouldn’t get an offer after being recommended for a Matt Chat.
The offer finally came, and on May 18, 2015, I started my first day at Automattic, working remotely from home.
I thought of many different ways of celebrating this important milestone in my life with a blog post. The elaborate post would highlight the biggest moments of these past years at Automattic, sprinkled with how it helped me grow not only professionally, but also as a person.
Instead, I opted for a short post. I realized I’ve been leaving half-finished posts in the hopes of perfecting them before publishing, and it’s the sneakiest form of procrastination one could ever face.
So, no more trip down memory lane for this one.
In a future post, I’ll write how the work has changed dramatically over the decade and illustrate why it’s more than just customer support. I myself have been part of many different initiatives and projects (sometimes called Guilds) — from writing and improving documentation to onboarding new hires.
But today, I just want to say that I’m thankful for being a part of this company for so long! Can’t say what the future holds (or how long it would be). I guess we’ll cross that bridge (and write about it) when we come to it. 🙂
*The asterisk in “text-based” is to highlight that because I’m introverted, I do the farthest thing from “thrive” at face-to-face or video communication. The internet has changed so much that even at remote companies, video call interviews have become the new norm. I’m fairly certain I wouldn’t land a job if I were to have a video interview today. 😅
To succeed in today’s wildly different world, the louder you are, the better. But that’s a topic for another day.
